Biography:
Dr Sarah Hopfinger (she/her) is an artist and researcher, who works at the intersections between live art, choreography, performance, ecology, intergenerational collaboration, chronic pain and crip practices, disability, and queerness. She creates collaborative and solo performances, often working with diverse collaborators including children and adults, trained and non-trained dancers, disabled and non-disabled performers, and nonhuman objects and materials. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally, with organisations such as Battersea Arts Centre, South London Gallery, Take Me Somewhere, Imaginate, Buzzcut, and Earth Matters On Stage (USA). She is currently carrying out a Carnegie funded practice-led research project, Ecologies of Pain, which explores through dance and performance how lived experiences of chronic pain can offer knowledge and insight about what it means to live with and respond to wider ecological pain.
Her performances and practice-led research respond to her lived experiences and she creates performance as a way to practice alternative and ethical ways of living and being in the world. Her work politically and philosophically emerges from crip and queer perspectives. Her work is also underpinned by ecological thinking: her aim is to enact our human entanglements in wider environmental and social ecologies through how and what she creates. She approaches performance-making and practice-led research as a way to ask difficult questions and to be within the unknown and complexities of those questions.
